Love Yourself & Love Your Body

0

Nowadays, so many people hate the way they look. I mean, let’s face it, everywhere you look, whether it’s on television, your social media feeds or in magazines, you’ll see ‘gorgeous’ women and men, showing off their body, wearing designer clothes, soaking up the sun on some remote beach on the far side of the world.

Additionally, you may be taking a selfie that you think looks great but, once uploaded, it only gets a couple of likes and comments, resulting in you taking it down. Why is this? What makes our minds do this to one another? It may seem far-fetched, but each of us can learn to love our bodies. It doesn’t matter whether we’re male or female, young or old or where we’re from. Make today a new beginning.

Become One with Your Body

One of the most common problems that people nowadays face is being out of tune with their ‘internal body’ image. Instead, most individuals solely focus on their external image. This is what people believe other people see themselves as, rather than how they think of themselves.

Instead of putting something on or caring what other people think, instead, how do you really feel about yourself? What do you really think of your body and how does your body feel every day? I’m not saying this is an easy thing to do. It’s easy to stare at yourself in mirror and point flaws, especially the flaws you think other people will notice.

Instead, stare yourself in the eyes and point out the positives to your body and the way you look. Practice this every day, and you’ll soon find you’ve become a lot more focused on how you feel and think, rather than your perception of what other people think.

Become Aware of Your Thoughts

Imagine you’ve been smoking cigarettes ten times a day for the last ten years. You would call that habit, wouldn’t you? So, now imagine that you’ve had negative thoughts about the way you look when you catch yourself in the mirror. When a fleeting thought pops in when you see your reflection in a window or when you go to the bathroom. I think it’s safe to say that many people would do this more than ten times a day.

This is a habit of negative thought and, like quitting smoking, it takes willpower to change. To beat your habit, you need to start becoming aware of your thoughts when you have them. When you’ve noticed a thought, challenge it. Self-criticism is one of the most important aspects of your mindset that you’ll need to focus on improving. In some cases, you’ll be shocked if you actually count up how many times you put yourself down in your head, usually without even noticing.

If you’re late for work, if you’ve eaten a ‘cheat’ food, if you say something to someone and wish you had said something else. All of these are negative thoughts that will impact the way you think about yourself. By practising and becoming aware of the way you think about yourself, the more chance you have of changing your perception.

Accept That Social Media is False Reality

If you were to break up with your partner, you wouldn’t take a picture of yourself crying your eyes out when you’re feeling as low as you’ve ever felt and post it on Instagram. Nor would you usually post a picture of you waking up in the morning looking extremely hungover after a night out. You just don’t see it.

Instead, what you see is photos of friends or individuals smiling together. You see Snapchat Stories of friends sitting in a bar having fun together or pristine selfies of individuals relaxing at home. What you don’t see is everybody getting drunk and falling out with their friends on the same night out. You don’t see the unedited, unfiltered version of these individuals.

One of the biggest steps you must take in feeling better about yourself is accepting that social media creates a false reality around you. People only post what people want you to see, not everything that’s happening all the time. You may see the odd negative post here and there, but it’s mainly positive. Life isn’t all positive. When it rains, it shines. Once you have come to terms with this, loving yourself becomes a lot easier.

You Are What You Look At

If you surround yourself day by day looking in glossy magazines of A-list celebrities, catwalk models and photoshopped images of superstars, you’re unconsciously hardwiring your brain to believe that everybody looks that certain way. For example, if you joined a running camp and lived in a world surrounded by runners for a year, that’s what you’d believe the norm was. It’s the same with everyday life.

Instead of just searching out and scrolling through post after post of touched up and photoshopped ‘icons’, instead, create a bit of variety in your life, or cut down on your visual content.

Make Today a New Beginning

With all the considerations above in mind, you may be thinking it’s extremely difficult to complete all these aspects, especially if you’ve been in your current habits for years. However, there’s a simple and effective way to help. Meditation.

Through meditation, even if you’re practising for 10-15 minutes a day, not only are you detaching yourself temporarily from the incessant posts and feeds that fill our lives, you’re also taking the time out to tune into your body, to see how you really feel. You’re also allowing yourself to view your thoughts as they come and go, really focusing on how your mind works and what you’re thinking about.

With practice, even after a couple of days, you’ll start to become a lot more aware in your life of the thoughts and judgements you have about yourself and others. From here, you can proactively change the way you think, ultimately leading to a happier, healthier mindset.

How to Meditate When You Don’t Want to Meditate

0

When you meditate, it’s all about breathing. Breathing makes the difference between life and death. This may seem like a silly statement but, at its core, it’s the truth. It’s such an important part of our lives that we all carry out every second of every day without even thinking. It’s such as crucial part of lives and even more essential for the condition of our health.

I’m not talking about getting sick or ill, although that is a part of it. I’m talking about our mental health. In numerous blogs and articles throughout this website, I’ve told of countless benefits of meditation and how it can change your life. Now, with this in mind, I understand that meditation may not be for everybody. After all, what’s good for one person may not be the best approach for another.

Whether you meditate everyday or you’ve not tried once, meditation always comes back to one main aspect. Breathing. It’s all about become conscious of your breathing, regulating and monitoring it in a way that suits you. I understand that the traditional form of meditation may not be for you, so how can you still enjoy the benefits? I’ll explain.

Sitting Still & Present

One of the main aspects of meditation is sitting still. If you’re moving about, playing on your smartphone or tapping away at a computer, it’s very hard not to be distracted. This is exactly what you counteract when you meditate Instead of sitting cross-legged on your yoga mat or cushion, try sitting still elsewhere. This could be in the lounge, in your chair, out in the garden or even on a park bench.

By sitting still, with your hands in your lap, you’ll naturally become aware of your breathing. You’ll also find your mind instantly becomes a lot more present than it was before. This may sound idealistic, especially in today’s busy world, but it works. I can tell you because I tried it just this morning. I live in a fairly rural area so I went into town, when to the closest park I could find and just sat doing nothing. Instantly, I became a lot more present and aware of each moment.

Follow Your Breathing

When you meditiate, a lot of practices will encourage you to follow your breathing. This is a tried and tested way to stay focus and to draw your attention to the present moment. If meditating isn’t for you, there are several ways you can still do this. Whether you’re at work or home, simply follow your breathing, even if it’s for half a minute.

You could even set up reminders, such as Post It Notes, the sound of an overflying plane or the sound of a car horn. These little reminders can jolt you into becoming aware of the each passing moment, even if it’s only for a couple of seconds. This is a great way to remain focused and present throughout the day.

Switching Off

One of the best apps I discovered recently was called Quality Time. This is a free app that monitors your smart device usage throughout the day. It even breaks down your app usage app by app, allowing you to see exactly how many minutes you’ve spent on each app. This is such an eye opener when it comes to digital device usage.

When I started, I ignored the app for around a week, using my phone as I normally would. I was shocked when I discovered that one day I had used my device more than five hours. Of course, I used my smart phone a lot, for emails, GPS, music and things like that. However, that left about two hours for unproductive stuff such as scrolling social media and browsing online when i could have found the time to meditate.

This is all time I could have spent in the present moment, instead of a virtual reality. I’m not saying you should stop using your smartphone altogether, in fact, used in the right way; they’re fantastic tools. However, switching off, even for say an hour a day, can help you to become a lot more present and focused in everything that you do.

Final Thoughts

Not everyone will want to meditate. Some of reading this may even find that the whole practice is nonsense or spiritual. However, you can still take the concepts of this practice to apply to your own life. This will enable you to achieve more while reducing those all-important stress levels!

How to Meditate to Stay Focused

0

Staying focused is one of the hardest things we have to do every day of our lives. Whether we’re at work, at home, spending time with our family or friends or even trying to watch a film or a documentary on our own, staying focused on what we are doing is difficult. Even now as I’m writing this, in the corner of my eye, I can see my smartphone flashing, and the urge to respond to my messages is constant.

These forms of distractions come in all shapes and sizes. It could be your smartphone or a colleague. You may find yourself playing games on your computer at work, or maybe you keep talking to other people around you. This is known as procrastination, and it’s one of the most counter-productive traits we have in this modern-age.

However, using a direct form of meditation, you can regain your focus, enabling you to get everything done like never before. This is a quick meditation that only takes a couple of minutes, enabling you to achieve more while ignoring and dismissing the distractions around you. Here’s how.

Find a Quiet Space

As with all meditation, you’ll need to find a quiet space. This is could the bathroom in your office, your desk or a quiet café on your lunch break. If you’re sitting at home and need to get things done, simply go to your bedroom or another quiet room where you won’t be disturbed. You’ll probably agree that finding a quiet space is easily said than done. If you’re struggling, simply pop in some headphones to create a quiet space. You can even play meditative music to help you concentrate.

Begin Meditating

Get yourself comfortable on your floor, chair or cushion, rest your hands gently on your knees or your lap and close your eyes. Start by breathing in deeply, filling up your lungs with air before releasing. As you exhale, gently push out all the air in your lungs while relaxing your body, especially your neck and shoulders. Follow your breath from the start of the inhale to the end of the exhale.

Start Concentrating

Now switch your breathing to going only through your nose. As you breathe in and out, feel the air in your nose. You could notice in inside your nose, at the beginning of your nose or on your top lip. Draw your focus to that point of your body and solely focus on that, still focusing on following your breath. However, follow it from this point. Draw all your focus onto this one dedicated point.

Dismissing Distractions

As with any session, your mind is probably going to wander off at some point, or you’ll hear things that draw your focus. This doesn’t matter, and you shouldn’t judge yourself for it. As soon as you notice you’re thinking of other things, think ‘thought’. Then return your focus to this point.

You can carry out this session for two minutes, five minutes or even half an hour, it’s completely up to you. When you do open your eyes again, you’ll feel so much more focused, enabling you to complete everything you had planned for that day successfully.

As a bonus tip, whether you’re working or at home, use binaural audio to concentrate your focus. One that I love to use while writing is this one. It’s simply background music that allows you to concentrate freely while blocking out external distractions.

How did these tips work for you? Do you have any other tips for people looking to increase their concentration? Let us know in the comment section below!

Why You Should Buy an Eco-Friendly Yoga Mat

0

Whether you practice at home or in class, your yoga mat will be something like a best friend. No matter what you’re doing, it will be there for you. If you’re feeling stressed and need to unwind, it’s there. If you’ve just mastered a new pose for the first time, it’s there. It’s a strange thing a yoga mat; it’s like an extension of ourselves. However, have you ever considered what your yoga mat is made of and how it could be affecting your health?

Let’s say that you practice yoga for half an hour a day, every single day. Over the course of a week, that’s over three and a half hours. I also used mine to meditate, so my time of my mat far exceeds this. In other words, this is a lot of time on the mat. But what can this contact with your mat do to you and your body over time?

Starting Out

When you’re starting in the practice of yoga, you can never be sure if it’s going to be for and it’ll stick (despite the ton of benefits that comes with it). With this in mind, it’s easy to opt for a cheaper yoga mat, so you don’t feel like you’re wasting a load of money if you don’t continue. However, these cheaper yoga mats can be more dangerous than you think.

Loaded with Carcinogens

If you do opt for a cheaper mat, the chances are that it’ll be loaded with PVC plastics. This is a cheap plastic material that is mass-produced on a large scale. It’s been proven time and time again that these plastics are very effective at being absorbed into your skin over prolonged periods of contact. This is why they are now becoming banned in all food products as well as already being banned in baby products.

In this example, if you’re practising a session and you get a sweaty back, your pores are open, allowing these PVC chemicals to be absorbed into your body. These plastics are known to be loaded with carcinogens, the main cause of cancer is human beings.

The Environment

As the title of this article suggests, PVC plastics are not very environmentally friendly. Not only can these chemicals become absorbed by your body, but also the environment. If you upgrade your mat or chuck it away, always remember that PVC materials are NOT bio-degradable. That means that these PVC chemicals will be leaking into the environment they are disposed in for many years to come.

Always Check Your Product

Despite some yoga mats claiming to be environmentally friendly, this is not always the case. If your yoga mat is made from polyester materials, this is also not bio-degradable and will cause similar damage to you and the environment. Instead, always look for natural rubbers, bamboo or even recycled materials.

We practice yoga to look after ourselves and for good health so make sure that’s exactly what the practice is doing. Not only do we want to look after ourselves, but also the world around us. The more people steer clear of cheap and non-biodegradable yoga mats, the less they will make. The Future of Meditation: VR Relaxation

0

As we all know, mindfulness and meditation experiences have become a booming industry, and it’s now estimated to be worth over $1 billion. Up until now, everyone has been excited to see where the industry will go next and now it seems like the answer is clear. M ss ng p eces (missing pieces but the spaces are the brand’s name) have now launched innovative VR experiences, especially for followers of meditation practices. There’s even one that can place you straight into the heart of a guided session.

The VR experiences were founded and created by the M ss ng P eces company alongside Jack Kornfield, founder of the lucrative Spirit Rock Meditation Center, a centre located in Northern California. Currently available, you can access a 360° video on YouTube, titled the Daydream.

In this VR experience, users can witness and virtually ‘partake’ in meditation speeches and talks as well as a ‘walking’ meditation, but it’s highly recommended that you sit through, for your own safety. These packages have been released with the hopes that it inspires other companies in the industry to do the same. During this stage, it’s all about trial and error of creating the content that people will respond and engage with. If this new technology and content can positively change someone’s life, as meditation does, it’s a job well done.

The Past & The Future Combined

However, it turns out that this isn’t the first time that technology and mindfulness have combined. Free Guided Meditation videos are currently available on the Oculus Rift store page for download right now. This can be found here under the experiences section. In these packages, there are 25 unique sessions to choose from, varying from Zen or Relaxation packages as well as customisable experiences. The hardware can even monitor your heart rate during the session to provide you with feedback on how effective your session was.

There is still some controversy as to whether using technology in this way is an effective way to meditate. Many people believe that meditation should be an escape and break from the stresses of everyday life.

Is It a Good Thing?

One reporter from Fox News trailed the Samsung Gear VR meditation experience at a showcase in New York.

During his experience, he states that his heart rate remained around 76 beats per minute throughout the experience. He trialled a variety of settings and virtual environments. He concluded that although the entire, yet brief experience, was definitely fun and immersive. However,  he wasn’t sure whether the experience was relaxing and doubted the future of the technology.

The Future of Meditation

However, only time will tell. Even if used as a gateway into meditation, if some people find it relaxing and find solace in the experiences. If someone can have a break from everyday life, then the technology has done its job. However, it’s understandable that it won’t be for everybody.

At Antaryami, we’d love to hear your thoughts! Do you think this is a great idea for encouraging people to meditate or do you think it’s a step too far? Ayurveda Treatments Becoming Increasingly Popular for Post Dengue Fever

0

Chennai, an Indian city, located on the southwest coast of India, has been in the news recently due to its situation related to Dengue Fever. Up till now, patients have been admitting themselves to government run hospitals, as advised by the state’s health department. This is advised as part of the program to control dengue fever in the area.

However, many of these admitted patients are giving up their government treatments in light of Ayurveda and other herbal medicine practices. This is because a large volume of the patients is suffering from side effects of the treatment. These side effects include; muscle weakness, anaemia, pneumonia and other bacterial infections, especially throat infections.

Usually, a victim of dengue fever can suffer from a variety of symptoms. These include an increased loss of appetite, discomfort in the abdomen regions, eye pains, diarrhoea and weight loss. With this in mind, Ayurveda doctors and practices have claimed the solution. They are effectively able to combat these symptoms using herbal remedies using vazhagham and other oils.

One Siddha doctor states that the virus is extremely harmful to the immunity of an individual. Even once treated, the immune system is not fully restored, and therefore there’s always room for further complications. In some instances, post dengue fever can be even more damaging than the virus itself.

How it Works

Ayurveda practices counteract these effects by actively strengthening the immunity, making it ideal for individuals in the post dengue stages. It’s even claimed that, over a long period, these practices can even fight the cause of the virus at its core. This works as the alkaline elements of the Ayurveda practices can soothe inflamed areas as well as assisting to soothe the chronic pain that’s common with the infections. Due to this, large numbers of patients are coming to Ayurveda and Sidda hospitals. These are especially happening in the Coimbatore, Krishnagiri and Kanyakumari and Theni districts, some of the most affected areas.

Patients are being advised by these hospitals to take Amukha Churanam, ideal for combatting the weight and appetite loss. Also, Ketu Oil is being given to sooth body pains as well as Kalathali churanam that helps to combat the breathing infections. Patients are also advised to avoid strenuous physical exercise and should be resting as much as possible.

Let us know your thoughts! Should the government and state health departments be looking into the effectiveness of these Ayurveda and Sidda hospitals? Let us know in the comment sections below and don’t forget to share this article with your family and friends!

How to Create the Ideal Space for Distraction-Free Meditation

0

Whether you’re a seasoned meditator or just starting out, the concepts of meditation are simple. Becoming present, clearing your mind and alleviating stress are among the most beneficial properties. However, a distraction-free zone is something we all struggle to find, no matter what our experience level. Peace. It doesn’t matter whether you’re living in a big city or out in the countryside, noises come in all shapes and sizes. While meditating, it’s not uncommon to still be aware of the hustle and bustle of everyday life around you. Today, we’ll explore how to create the perfect space and environment to meditate, free from distraction.

Shut the Doors

Whichever room you’re meditating in, make sure you shut the doors behind you. With that being said, shut all the doors in your house. Sound and noise travel a smaller distance through solid objects. If you place something on the door handle, other people can be aware that you’re meditating and can take extra care to be quiet. I’m sure they won’t mind being extra quiet for half an hour or so.

Use Headphones

If you’re using a guided meditation to practice, use headphones instead of your phone or computer speaker. This can help you to zone in, hearing the sounds and instructions a lot clearer than you normally would. Some meditation apps have timer’s built-in, allowing you to plug in and clear your mind without outside distractions. If you don’t use an electronic device, invest in ear plugs to help block out external distractions. This is ideal if you live in a city.

Kit Out Your Designated Space

Meditating is all about clearing your mind from distractions. Ideally, you don’t want to open your eyes again to realise clutter surrounds you. Whether you meditate in your bedroom, your office or living space, deep clean once and then stay on top of it. If you open your eyes and enter a tidy, uncluttered room, this will have huge benefits for your mindset.

Venture Out into Nature

There’s nothing more liberating than heading out into a natural environment to meditate. If you live in a rural area, this shouldn’t be too hard to find. If you live in a city, a local park or green space could also be ideal. It still may be busy but if you can find a quiet corner or bench, even better. If this is the case, treat yourself to a journey outside the city once a week. You could take a bus or cycle to the outskirts where you can find somewhere quiet. The benefits of meditating with nature around you are unparalleled.

Start Your Day Early

While the rest of the world is asleep, get up a little bit early to practice meditating. For example, if you usually wake up at 6 am, wake up at half five instead. This means the world around you will be quiet and perfect for meditating. This is an excellent point to consider as Ayurveda recommends waking up early with the sunrise. This synchronises your body and mind to the sun time, just as nature intended.

Summary

Did any of these aspects appeal to you or help you with your meditating distraction-free? Maybe I’ve missed out a crucial point that helps you achieve a distraction-free session? Let me know your thoughts and advice for others in the comment section below! And don’t forget to share this article with your family and friends so they can benefit as well!
