Win a luxury yoga retreat in India with Tea India

Tea India’s Masala chai is a blend of Assam tea leaves and ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, black pepper and anise, that makes a delicious alternative to coffee or other tea drinks.

Chai tea is much lower in caffeine than coffee and also has beneficial properties. The Assam leaves are rich in antioxidants and the spices are considered in Ayurveda to be ‘sattvic’ or calming, vitalizing and mentally clarifying.

The tea is deliciously warm and spicy and makes the perfect pick-me-up in the cooler weather. You can make the tea with water or milk depending on which you prefer. I made a delicious chai latte, using cow’s milk, but you could use a nut milk or soy. The latte was rich, warm and spicy. I could particularly taste the ginger and cinnamon and there was a hint of the anise coming through giving the drink a slight aniseed flavor. Overall, it was a deliciously warming drink for a cooler day and one I will be coming back to.

All Tea India products are 100% Rainforest Alliance Certified.

Tea India is offering a chance to win a luxury yoga retreat in India with its Masala Chai. Visit www.teaindia.co.uk for details

Book Review: Chakras for Beginners by Tai Morello

Chakras for Beginners: How to balance Your Chakras, Radiate Energy and Heal Yourself by Tai Morello

This book is a beautifully written, clear introduction to the theory of the Hindu system of chakras. The subject is a complicated one, but the author manages to explain it clearly, introducing the reader to complex ideas in a way that is easy to understand.

The book begins with an explanation of the chakras. Tai explains these in a concise but comprehensive way and offers a considerable depth of insight into how the chakras affect us. This is followed in chapter two by a more detailed introduction to the seven chakras that is both thorough and clear.

In chapter three Tai moves on to ways of working with the chakras. The author offers a warning about the dangers of working in this area. He responsibly advises a ‘gradual program of cleansing and balancing them as a preparation for opening’.

Tai explains that the chakras can be balanced through hatha yoga and advises a set of asanas that can be helpful in this process. These are given in Sanskrit and so will be unfamiliar to many readers, however, the translations can be found online. Alternatively, Tai has also written a book on Yoga, which explains these.

Tai next goes on to describe yogic breathing or ‘pranayama’ as a further technique to cleanse the chakras. The author explains that pranayama actually means the subtle energy that is connected with the breath, which was a new insight for me. Tai also gives a reasonably detailed explanation of the process of alternative nostril breathing.

Next, the author explains in detail a chakra visualization meditation that gently works through the chakras. He does not include the crown chakra because he warns that ‘Any premature attempt to tap into its energy could lead to disaster.’ Tai also points out the important of grounding at the end of this exercise.

Concluding thoughts about this book

I have read other books about the chakras so the subject was not entirely new to me. However, the author’s clarity helped me to understand the system of chakras more clearly. I also gained lots of new knowledge. The author does assume a certain familiarity with subjects such as yoga and meditation, but the book is generally suitable for beginners and those with some experience of the chakra system.

This really is a great introduction to the subject and I would recommend it to anyone interested in getting a good basic knowledge in this area of spiritual study. I would also recommend this book to anyone who is interested in yoga and pranayama as the author explains how working on our chakras can compliment these practices. You can buy the book here . Learn Ayurveda Series – Benefits of Yashtimadhu (Licorice)

0

Yashtimadhu is the Sanskrit name for an herbal medication knows as Licorice in English. In India, it is also commonly known as Mulethi. It has been an important part of the Ayurvedic Medication System from a long time. Yashti means stalk or stem and Madhu means sweet. The plant of Yashtimadhu has a purple color and blooms white flowers. It grows in South Asia and also in Central Asia and Mediterranean regions. The roots of Yashtimadhu are used in herbal medication for alleviating many diseases.

The roots, which are the ones with medicinal value, are of gray color from the outside, and yellow on the inside. The active compounds that make this root beneficial are glycyrrhizin, calcium salt, amino salt, vitamins, minerals and other needed ingredients. Glycyrrhizin itself is more than 50 times sweeter compared to sugar. For this reason, it was earlier used as a sweetener, but later it was found more effective for medicinal purposes.

The most common use of Mulethi or Yashtimadhu has been to treat throat problems. At one time, before the days of cough syrups, it was common to chew Mulethi for relieving cough related problems. Chewing Mulethi brought near instant relief from cough. Yashtimadhu is a “bronchodilator”, that is, it is a substance that dilates the bronchi and bronchioles, decreasing resistance in the respiratory airway and increasing airflow to the lungs. It is this quality that enables relief from cough. This quality of Yashtimadhu is also applied by cigarette manufacturers in a different way – they blend tobacco with Yashtimadhu (They, of course, call it Licorice!) so that cigarette smoke becomes easier to inhale.

So next time you have cough, you might consider chewing Mulethi like our earlier generations did, rather than rely on a chemical based cough syrup!

The other most important use of Yashtimadhu is to remove bad breath. Yashtimadhu happens to have strong antibacterial properties also. It has been, of course under different names, a subject of research by modern day scientists. Even a prominent toothpaste company described how Licorice roots can prevent tooth and gum decay and help with bad breath by killing bacteria:

Its medicinal properties also enable relief from other ailments. Here is a brief summary:

1. Yashtimadhu consists of anti-inflammatory agents and demulcents that fight against most of the common skin problems. Apply the concentrated extract of Yashtimadhu roots in the infected skin areas for quick relief. Some of the sunscreens also contain Yasthimadhu in their formulation to prevent the skin burn in the sun.

2. Flavonoids present in Yashtimadhu help in reducing body fats.

3. Small amounts of Yashtimadhu helps to maintain the digestion and also clears bowel movements. It also helps treat constipation and acidity.

Yashtimadhu, because of its sweetness, can be added to tea (as a replacement of sugar), though it has a different flavor than sugar and may not be to everyone’s liking.

However, Yashtimadhu should be taken in small quantities. Consuming large quantities can increase blood pressure, and excessive consumption by pregnant women can create complications. It is best to use it in consultation with a doctor.

Review: BlissCloud Yoga Mat

0

A BlissCloud yoga mat is the perfect yoga accessory for the environmentally conscious yogi who wants a little luxury and style.

The BlissCloud’s Environmental Credentials

I was interested in trying the BlissCloud Yoga mat for its environmental credentials. Many yoga mats use plastics and synthetic dyes as well as other potentially toxic products. However, BlissCloud yoga mats are free from latex, silicone, toxic glue and phthalates. The beautiful designs are made entirely with water based inks. This use of natural ingredients meant there was no nasty chemical smell when I unwrapped my mat ready for use. The base of the mat is made from 100% tree rubber and the mats are also totally recyclable and biodegradable. So the BlissCloud yoga mat ticks all the right environmentally responsible boxes.

mat3

Using the BlissCloud Yoga Mat

But I also wanted a mat that was a pleasure to use. BlissCloud yoga mats are covered with a microfiber layer, which is soft and luxurious but also provides a great non-slip surface on which to practice. I had no problems with slipping or sliding while holding poses. The mats are also beautifully made, light, easy to carry and 100% washable, too. But the best thing about BlissCloud yoga mats is the range of stunning designs that will brighten your yoga practice and make them a joy to use. So the BlissCloud ticked all the right boxes for ease of use, practicality and design as well.

mat-2

One additional plus from choosing a BlissCloud yoga mat is that they donate £1 from every mat sale to The Karuna Trust, a U.K. run Buddhist organization working to provide education, health and cultural projects for more than 50,000 of the poorest people in India each year.

At £58 each, these mats are at the pricier end of the market. However, their environmental credentials and quality mean that they will give you many years of practice with no ill effects on the planet. For this reason, I think they offer good value in the long term.

Navratri – The story behind a colorful festival

0

Navratri is a festival celebrated by Hindus by worshiping goddess Durga with lots of joy. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Durga killed the demon king Mahishasur, who had defeated and terrorized the devas. Navratri primarily commemorates this momentous event in various ways.

Navratri is a nine day festival, celebrated in the month of “Ashwin” (Ashwin is a month in the Hindu lunar calendar which usually falls in October). Navratri is celebrated with nightly dances in the state of Gujarat. But the same Goddess Durga is worshipped for similar lengths of time in many other parts of India. In West Bengal, Durga Puja lasts ten days. The entire state closes down for a week for the celebrations. In Nepal, it is the national festival called Dashain and lasts for the same length of time. The Goddess is worshipped in many other parts of India from Kashmir to Kanyakumari for lesser duration.

Legend has it that when the demon Mahishasur defeated and terrorized the devas, they went to the highest trinity of Hindu pantheon – Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. On hearing the devas, the trinity were wrathful and their wrath gave out light from their faces. The lights combined and Durga emerged out of it. The trinity also bestowed her with a number of weapons. Durga then confronted Mahishasur and his army of demons and slew all of them, thus relieving the people and devas from great terror.

The day of her final victory is especially celebrated in many parts of India, mostly in the north, as Vijayadashami. As it happens, Vijayadashami is also the day, according to Hindu mythology, when Lord Rama finally vanquished and killed Ravana. This day, therefore, has enormous significance for Hindus in terms of fighting injustice and oppression. Vijayadashami is celebrated also by burning enormous effigies of Ravana and his lieutenants.

Many people choose to fast on all or some of these nine days. In most parts of the country, different kinds of worship rituals are conducted. In Gujarat, several sites in every city and town become the congregating place for people to come and perform traditional Gujarati dances known as Garba and Dandiya. In West Bengal, literally thousands of “pandals” are erected where the statue of Durga is placed for the duration of the festivities. At the end of the ten day period, the deity is taken in a procession to the nearest river or lake and immersed ceremoniously.

This is indeed the most festive period of the year for Hindus. Being a part of it will make you feel connected to glorious Hindu heritage and tradition.

Yoga App Review: Yoga Wake Up

What The Yoga Wake Up App Does

Yoga Wake Up is an audio app that offers yoga, stretching and meditation sequences as an alternative to a conventional alarm clock.

Yoga Wake up offers several programs to help you start your day in a relaxed and positive way. There are several free Wake Up’s and a variety of other choices for a small cost.

yoga-wake-up

How Yoga Wake Up Works

I listened to Spirit Wake Up by Jen Smith. This Wake Up starts with some simple deep breathing exercises. Jen has a lovely calming voice and the background music is gentle and soothing, so this was a wonderful way to ease myself into the day. The breathing exercises are followed by simple stretches that can be done while still in bed. The program then moves into a more conventional yoga workout. These further poses were great to get the blood flowing and ease stiff muscles. None of the poses are too difficult or complex and the instructions are easy to follow.

Jen’s commentary is inspiring and definitely helped me feel positive and optimistic about the day ahead. This app offers an excellent way to start the day on the right foot, helping me to feel relaxed and positive and easing my stress, anxiety, and tension.

I would suggest having a yoga mat set up beside the bed ready for your Wake Up practice. Some knowledge of yoga poses would also be useful as this program doesn’t go into too much detail about the alignment of each pose.

Overall, the app provided much more than I was expecting.

Price: Free
Download Options: iOS
Additional Wake Up’s are available from £0.79.

Wake Up Yoga certainly provides a calming welcome into the new day and is a great alternative to a harsh alarm.

Book Review: Yoga Girl by Rachel Brathen

0

Part self-help and part memoir, Yoga Girl is an inspirational look at the adventure that took writer and yoga teacher Rachel Brathen from her hometown in Sweden to the jungles of Costa Rica and finally to a paradise island in the Caribbean that she now calls home.

Featuring spectacular photos of Rachel practicing yoga in amazing locations, along with step-by-step yoga sequences and simple recipes for a healthy, happy, and fearless lifestyle, Yoga Girl is all you need to inspire your own yoga journey.

The best things about Yoga Girl

Rachel’s journey is inspiring, but not all of us could or would want to make such an extreme change in our lives. However, the book has a supportive tone and is reassuringly down to earth. Right on page one, Rachel reminds us that ‘you are good enough the way you already are’. This is a refreshing change from the many health books that play on our fears of not being good enough to sell us their products. I can see why so many people have warmed to Rachel and why she has more than a million followers on Instagram.

This theme of acceptance continues throughout the book. Reading Yoga Girl is like having a supportive friend who is with me every step of the way. Okay, so when I see her in the photos on a beautiful Caribbean Island, looking windswept, toned and happy, it becomes a little harder for me to see her as the girl next door who could be my best friend – let alone someone I could aspire to be. But she’s just so supportive – I have to let my envy go!

The book contains plenty of useful advice, too. The yoga poses include detailed descriptions, photographs and variations making them easy for anyone, including beginners, to follow. There are also plenty of inspiring stories from Rachel’s own life that illustrate her points well.

The photography in Yoga Girl is stunning, which makes it a pleasure to own and browse through.

One of the things I love about this book is its ability to make me ponder what I really want from life and why. This isn’t just a book about yoga, it’s a book about learning to love and accept yourself and really be who you were born to be.

Who I would recommend this book to

For that reason, and for the beautiful photographs, I highly recommend this book. It would make a great gift for anyone who loves yoga. It is also the kind of body positive book that I would be happy to give a to a teenage girl or young woman to help her be more confident in herself. You can buy the book here.

You can follow Rachel on Instagram here. Happy Reading….

Top 7 Uses of Chandan for skin care

0

Chandan can be used as a natural treatment for the skin. Chandan comes in different forms (Chandan powder or Chandan Oil). Chandan powder or oil can be applied to the skin for making it glow. There are many Chandan products like soaps, cosmetics and powders. Chandan is natural and can be used daily. In Ayurveda, Chandan has its own prominence and has been in use for ages in Skin care. Chandan also has some prominence in Hindu Mythology.

Chandan prominence in Hindu Mythology
According to Hindu Mythology, “Lord Shiva’s wife Goddess Parvati created Lord Ganesha by mixing Chandan and clay. She made a beautiful doll out of the mixture and breathed life into it”. Since then Chandan tree itself is worshipped as a sacred object. Chandan is the Indian name of sandalwood. Chandan carvings are also used to decorate houses and sometimes women use Chandan extract as a beauty product. It is also considered sacred and used in many Indian rituals and ceremonies. The wood itself has a pleasant aroma and it is burned to fill the house with fragrance. Many people also burn Chandan sticks to create fragrant ambiance in homes and temples. In earlier days the wood of Chandan tree was used for building houses as it prevents white ants from destroying houses. Chandan is extracted from branches of the trees.

Chandan for Skin Care
For smooth Skin : Mix 1 teaspoon of Chandan powder, half teaspoon of turmeric powder and 2 tablespoons of honey. Apply it on the neck and face, leave this “pack” for 20 minutes and then use cold water to wash it off. Using it twice a week will make the skin look fresh and smooth.

For Fair Skin : For fairer skin tone, mix one teaspoon Chandan powder with milk and add almond powder. Apply it on neck areas and face daily. It also helps match the skin color with other parts of the body.

For Acne Treatment : Take One teaspoon of Chandan powder with 1 teaspoon of black gram powder and mix it using distilled water. Apply the mixture on the areas of acne and pimples and wash the mixture after half an hour using cold water.

For Glowing Skin : Add the following to Chandan powder: turmeric powder, Multani Mitti and Rose Water, and mix it well. Apply it on the face, hands and legs 30 minutes before the bath. If the skin is dry, use milk instead of rose water. Regular use of this Chandan “face pack” will make the skin soft and glowing.

For Clear Skin : Mix equal amount of Chandan, lime juice, and coconut oil and apply it over the acne affected areas for a night. This will also help treat the acne. The mixture works full night by decreasing the unwanted materials and clearing the face. In the morning, wash the mixture off with cold water.

For Sun tan treatment : Take one tablespoon of crushed cucumber or powder, curd, lemon juice, honey and Chandan powder. Mix the ingredients with fresh tomato juice and apply it on the affected parts. Leave the mixture for one hour and wash it with water. The skin cells absorb all the vitamins and then the skin feels fresh and tan is reduced.

For Body Fragrance : Chandan also helps in reducing body odor. It has a natural fragrance that cleans the air in its surroundings. Perfumes and Soaps made with Chandan help remove the body odor for many hours. Till a century ago or so, women used to boil Chandan wood in water and used the water for a bath. This gave their bodies a pleasant fragrance.

Why do Hindus Celebrate Rakshabandhan (Rakhi)

0

Relationships are the foundations of many festivals in India. One such festive occasion is the Rakshabandhan. Rakshabandhan acknowledges the bond of love and protection between a brother and a sister. On this auspicious occasion, siblings wish for each others’ joy and pray for each others’ good health. Rakshabandhan is celebrated on the full moon day of the lunar month Sharavana.

On this occasion, sisters apply tilak on the forehead of their brothers and tie a sacred thread, Rakhi, on their brothers’ wrists. The sister prays for the welfare of the brother and his protection from evil. The brother promises to always protect and take care of his sister. In the recent times, the festival has shifted its focus from just a brother and a sister; the Rakhi can also be tied by, let us say, a disciple to their Guru. Also important to note is, the celebration is not reserved for blood relatives only, as a girl can ‘adopt’ a brother through tying of the silk thread around his wrist.

The ritual has now gone beyond recognizing the warmth and affection between siblings, as Rakhi is now even tied around the wrists of good friends and neighbors to accentuate the need of an amicable social life.

ORIGINS

The origins of this festival are attributed variously to the following fabled events:

1. The fight of Indra with Vritra – Indra, the king of the gods, had lost his kingdom to the demon Vritra. At the orders of guru Brihaspati, Sachi, Indra’s wife tied a thread around the wrist of her husband to secure his victory in the next match. This was a sign of protection against evil. However, later the tradition developed around the brother – sister relationship rather than between spouses.

2. Draupadi and Krishna during the Rajsuya Yagya – Krishna cut his finger while the beheading Shishupal (as punishment for his outrages), and Draupadi, the wife of Pandavas, tore a strip of her sari and tied it on Krishna’s finger to stop the bleeding. She thus said to have tied him in debt as Krishna promised he would repay each and every ‘thread’. True to his word, when Draupadi needed Krishna’s help, he came to her rescue in a later event, and prevented her from being stripped in front of the court.

3. Rani Karnavati and the emperor Humayun: During the medieval period, the Rajputs fought against the Muslim invaders. Rakhi was a spiritual symbol associated with the protection of the sisters. According to the story, a Rakhi was sent by Queen Karnavati, the widow of the then king of Chittor to Emperor Humayun.

The Emperor was really moved by the sweet gesture and he accepted the rakhi and thenceforth considered the Karnavati as his sister.

THE CELEBRATION OF RAKSHABANDHAN IN INDIA

Rakshabandhan is celebrated all over India by people from all walks of life, but different regions in the country celebrate the day differently.

RAKHI PURNIMA

This is how Rakshabandhan is called in the north and the northwest India. The word “Purnima” means a full moon night.

PURNIMA NARIYAL

In western India and parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa, this day is known as Nariyal Purnima. On this day, an offering of coconuts (nariyal) is made to the sea as a form of respect to the god Varuna, the god of the sea. Nariyal Purnima is the symbol of the commencement of the fishing period and fishermen, who depend on the sea for a living, make an offering to the god Varuna so they can collect abundant fish in the next fishing season.

AVANI AVITTAM / UPAKARMAN

In parts of southern and eastern India (Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Orissa), this day is celebrated as the day of Avani Avittam. In Karnataka, it is known as Upakarma by the followers of Yajurveda.

PURNIMA KAJARI

In the central part of India and Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar, this day is known as Purnima Kajari. It is a very important and blessed day for farmers and women. In the Kajari Navami, there are performances of various rituals by mothers, and they last until the day when the full moon arrives.

This is the most beloved and sweetest of festivals in Hinduism that started generations back and has lived on to this day. It marks the sweet bond that lies between a brother and a sister and the day is marked with happiness and joy in their lives.

Rakshabandhan festival not only symbolizes the bond of love, protection and care, but also transmits an innate message of universal love between siblings. It brings out the spiritual significance of nurturing positive thoughts for each other.
