Kundalini Yoga – the yoga of awareness.

0

Kundalini Yoga derives its name from the focus on awakening Kundalini energy through regular practice of meditation, pranayama, chanting, mantra and asana. While Kundalini yoga is physical, it has a clear focus on the spiritual elements of life, particularly on balancing the chakras and changing perception.

In ancient eastern religions, it was believed that at the base of the spine there lies a source of divine energy, like a coiled snake. Kundalini yoga is a method of learning to uncoil this serpent power and draw it up through the seven chakras so we can step into our divine potential.

Kundalini yoga uses sound, breath and posture to achieve this awakening.

Serpent power

Uncoiling the snake through Kundalini yoga is a powerful experience and should only be undertaken with the proper guidance. All forms of energy can be creative or destructive depending on how they are used; so working with this energy should be undertaken only with guidance from the proper teacher.

The whole yogic system is aimed towards enhancing perception because you can only understand that which you perceive. This is the reason the symbolism of the snake is used. When the snake energy has reached the top of the head, it means the third eye is opened, heightening perception and awareness. If the third eye has opened, it means that another dimension of perception beyond the physical world of our senses has opened up allowing us to look inward and become aware of the divine.

Raising Kundalini energy helps you to experience life more intensely, but it is not a power to be taken lightly. May of us are subconsciously trying to raise our Kundalini energy, by meditating, praying, singing or even drinking alcohol. Kundalini yoga offers a framework to raise energy in a safe and properly directed way where it can be of true benefit to your life.

So what is a Kundalini class like?

• A Kundalini class begins with reciting a mantra to tune in.

• This is followed by some warm up postures.

• Then a set of postures called a kriya is completed. A kriya typically has repeated postures practiced with varied breath work or chanting and it can also include dancing, yelling or chanting. There are different kriyas for different outcomes such as cleansing the liver or balancing the metabolism.

• The kriya is followed by a deep relaxation to balance energy, and calm the nervous system.

• The class ends with a period of meditation to help focus and calm the mind. The meditation may include breath-work, a mudra (hand position) and chanting.

Kundalini Yoga is probably the most spiritual style of yoga in the West. It is not a form to be dabbled in, but should be entered into seriously. With the right guidance Kundalini yoga could change your life. You can also combine the practice with other types of yoga that focus on the more physical aspects of the practice. If Kundalini sounds too intense for you, you can still experience the many benefits of other forms of yoga, all of which can help balance the body, mind and spirit.

Yin Yoga – a deeper form

0
pexels-photo-91631-large

Yin yoga is a quiet, meditative yoga practice, also known as ‘Taoist’ yoga. Yin poses are passive and allow the release of tension in key joints, including ankles, knees, hips, neck, shoulders and the back.

Yin Yoga is based on the Taoist concept of yin and yang, opposite and complementary principles in nature. Yin yoga works with Yin or feminine energy rather than Yang or masculine energy. Yin relates to the cool, stable and unmoving aspects while yang relates to the warm, moving and changing aspects.

How this works in practice is that in Yin yoga, poses or asanas are held for several minutes at a time and you relax into the pose. Many of the poses are done on the floor or sitting down. Because of the slow pace of Yin yoga, it is a very meditative form. Taking time to relax into each asana helps the mind to slow down and cease its endless chatter. Because of these aspects, Yin yoga can be particularly useful to help with issues of the mind, such as anxiety or addiction. Yin yoga is also useful for those who want to increase flexibility without an exhausting routine and for this reason it is popular with athletes.

Mental and Emotional benefits of Yin yoga

As yoga was developed as a method of conditioning and preparing for sitting meditation, the practice of holding asanas for long periods of time has always been a significant part of traditional yoga practice. This mindfulness aspect of Yin yoga is still very much present today. During a class, teachers show practitioners how to observe the breath and use this as a way to focus on the present moment, allowing thoughts and feelings to arise but practicing the art of watching them without getting lost in them.

This means that Yin yoga is very calming on a mental and emotional level. It can help us learn to distance ourselves from the constant mind chatter and persistent, negative thought patterns. This triggers the parasympathetic nervous system (the opposite of the flight or fight response) thus calming us and reducing heart rate and blood pressure.

Physical benefits of Yin yoga

As well as these mental and emotional benefits, Yin yoga also helps physically by working on the connective tissues of the body to increase circulation and improve flexibility. Yin yoga can be a particularly effective way to open tight hips and hamstrings.

What to expect from a Yin yoga class

• Yin yoga classes are suitable for beginners and more experienced practitioners alike.

• The pace is slow, so you need to wear comfortable, warm clothes and maybe keep your socks on.

• The most noticeable difference between Yin yoga and more dynamic forms is the slow pace. The asanas may be the same as in other forms of yoga. However, they are held for five minutes or more.

• You will be guided to focus on your breathing while holding the poses.

Yin yoga is an ideal form of yoga for those who would like a quiet meditative practice, especially for those who want to work on emotional issues, are stressed and anxious, or have an addiction or eating disorder. Yin yoga is also useful for those looking for the benefits of increased flexibility without an exhausting cardio workout. Yin yoga is also a great complement to more dynamic forms of yoga, helping to improve flexibility and deepen awareness.

Feel the heat with Bikram Yoga

yoga-dancer-sky-blue-60697

Bikram yoga, also known as ‘hot’ yoga, is a challenging and intense form of yoga held in rooms heated to temperatures of nearly 105 degrees and 40% humidity.

In Bikram yoga, a series of 26 postures is performed along with two breathing exercises in a session of 90 minutes.

The benefits of Bikram yoga

There are several benefits of Bikram Yoga. The major one is that you sweat toxins out of your system by working in such intense heat. Bikram yoga is also beneficial because the warmth helps the muscles relax allowing you to go more deeply into the poses. An additional benefit is that the warmth elevates the heart rate, making the workout more aerobic. Bikram yoga can also relieve breathing difficulties such as asthma. Studies have also suggested that it can help painful conditions such as arthritis. Bikram Yoga can also help with weight loss; men burn an average of 460 calories per session and women around 330. Also, as with all forms of yoga, it can increase flexibility.

In addition to these physical benefits, Bikram yoga may also promote good mental health. Studies have found that yoga can be helpful for relieving depression and anxiety.

Scientists at Harvard Medical are researching whether Bikram Yoga could be used as a treatment for depression. Their study followed 24 women who described themselves as ‘emotionally distressed.’ The participants took two 90-minute yoga classes a week for three months. At the end of three months, women in the yoga group reported improvements in perceived stress, depression, anxiety, energy, fatigue, and well-being. *

Preparing for a Bikram Yoga class

• If you have any worries about your health, consult a doctor before taking a Bikram yoga class.

• Bikram yoga is not usually suitable for people with heart problems, high blood pressure or pregnant women. If you fall into any of these categories, choose a more relaxed form of yoga.

• It is important to prepare properly for a Bikram yoga class by ensuring that you are well hydrated. Drink plenty of water in the hours before the class. It is also advisable not to eat for at least two hours before the class.

• To rehydrate and replace lost body salts, have an electrolyzing drink or coconut water after the class.

How to ensure the class goes smoothly

• Wear cool comfortable clothes that allow you to move easily.

• When taking a Bikram yoga class, do not be tempted to keep up with others as you may push yourself too hard. Go at your own pace and take breaks if you need to.

• If you feel uncomfortable or panicky, stop and breathe through your nose for a full minute until the feeling passes.

• Be careful not to overstretch the muscles, aim for gradual progress with each lesson rather than pushing too hard initially.

What Is The Difference Between Being Spiritual And Being Religious?

0
Tumblr_o0dwnrHzZD1slhhf0o1_1280

Is being religious spiritual? And is being spiritual the same as following a religion?

Whilst both these statements have an element of truth, it raises questions that divide opinion. Even Deepak Chopra has a take on it:

“Religion is belief in someone else’s experience. Spirituality is having your own experience.”

Chopra’s summary is a point of view that most spiritual people would vehemently agree with. However, not all religious people are misled by dogma. All modern day religions, including Hindu, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism were born from ancient writing that teach spirituality.

The great divide between spiritualism and religion is the way the teachings are passed on to participants. For example, religion focuses on things on the outside, a God, and other people. Spirituality teaches you to look on the inside and understand the self.

Religious institutions are designed to control people. They typically tell followers what is right and wrong, what to do and what not to do. Spiritual people, on the other hand, explore their problems and try to discover what the issue is with themselves. It is a process of self-realization.

What is spirituality?

Spirituality and religion are so closely connected that spirituality requires defining. So many people, who claim to be religious or spiritual, go on to attack the other for its faults.

But is this really, ‘being in the spirit of things?’

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and has the right to express their beliefs in ways that works for them. It makes me laugh when people who follow new-age spiritualism condemn religion for trapping people into believing stories when they are being trapped to believe ideas by expressions they do not explore and don’t know the full meaning of.

To me, being spiritual is being connected with the self. Understanding what you truly want from life and being in total control of your thoughts, emotions and actions brings bliss and peace of mind every day. Spirituality is about being connected to the soul, doing the things you want to do and achieving the goals you set for yourself.

It is all too easy to become disconnected from the self in the modern age. There are so many distractions, with TV, sports, the internet, the socializing, work and all the other life’s trappings, that we don’t take the time to just be. We are called human beings, but we live like human doings.

And we are essentially spiritual beings who can have a human experience. Think about how you feel when you are doing something that you don’t really want to do. You feel repelled, uncomfortable and do not enjoy the experience.

Have you also had the experience that you were on the wrong path in life? Then there comes a point in time where you think: no this is not right for me, and for a while you may not know what to do? But then an idea emerges, and that idea feels right. Have you felt that?

This is your soul speaking to you. This is your true self telling you what you really want from life. This is your spirit telling you who you are. So being spiritual is really about being connected with your true self and knowing what you want from life.

When you are in tune with yourself, you are in tune with nature. You connect with divine inspiration and find more harmony and balance in your life. This is when we are being truly spiritual.

Why is religion not spiritual?

This is a question that is not phrased correctly. Religion is spiritual if the person following the religion is spiritual. It really all boils down to how an individual practices his or her religion. Hinduism encourages you to look on the inside, so it is easy to be spiritual if you are Hindu.

Christians and Muslims tend to look on the outside. That doesn’t mean all Christians and Muslims are not spiritual. As I said, it depends on the individual and I have met many people from both faiths who understand that the teachings in the Bible and the Koran are symbolic, and are not to be taken literally. They too reflect on their experiences in life and try to make sense of it all. This is being spiritual.

The confusion in religious circles arises because the authorities use the religion to control people. It is a tool of corruption that has been used for centuries to divide people, and has also been used as a catalyst for war. Nothing has changed in today’s world.

But here’s something not many people know. The English word ‘church’ derives from an ancient Celtic word ‘Kirk’ which is still used today in Scotland. ‘Kirk’ came from the German word “Kirche” which in turn has its roots in the ancient Greek word “Circe.”

In Greek mythology, a character known as Mother Circe turns people to animals and brainwashes them to become their servants. This is what modern day religious organizations do. How many religious extremists do we see who have been manipulated into thinking “their God” will save them?

When pastors inadvertently teach lessons in the bible based on their training and personal interpretations – they often do not explain the real spiritual meaning. Instead, they explore moral values, but in doing so, people unfortunately lose the spiritual concept of religion.

We cannot blame religion itself as spiritual teachings are right there in ancient texts. It is the misinterpretation of the symbolism taught by religious institutions that steer people towards adopting moral values towards others and forgetting about themselves as part of the development process of life.

So this is where I feel most of the confusion arises between spirituality and religion. There is no right or wrong faith to follow providing you follow it IN the right way. Religion versus spiritual beliefs is certainly not something we should be arguing about or fighting over.

And whatever path you choose is the right path for you if you feel drawn to it. What is most important is that you use the wisdom in religious and spiritual writings to study yourself and reach a state of self-realization so that you can expand your conscious awareness.

Triphala – Healthy features for everyday living

0
Triphala

Triphala means combination of three different fruits – Amalaki aka Emblica Officinalis, Bibhitaki aka Terminalia Bellirica and Haritaki aka Terminalia Chebula. It is most commonly used for bowel problem and has smoothing effects over digestion. Ayurveda Triphala is utilized for various other problems too, like urinary, respiratory, nervous system related and reproduction related ones. It has powerful antioxidants that protect body cells from damage over the course of time. The anti-ageing substitute present in it keeps a person young by keeping them healthy. Many diseases occur due to improper digestion. Keep your digestion strong by consuming Triphala. Since ancient times, many people have used it for a longer and healthy lifestyle.

Three fruits used for Triphala have their unique effects on the body:

Amalaki: Amalaki is traditional Indian gooseberry which greatly supports digestion. It is also a main ingredient in many herbal supplements. Aside from digestion Amalaki gives various other benefits, such as balancing the sugar levels in blood, protecting the eyes, maintaining cholesterol levels, etc.

Bibhitaki: Bibhitaki has the ability to treat problems related to diabetes, headache, constipation and asthma. There are many minerals, vitamins and proteins present in it that the human body requires. It is recommended for hair problems including the occurrence of Dandruff.

Haritaki: Haritaki is a rich source of several minerals, including copper, potassium, iron, manganese and selenium. It has cardio tonic and anti-bacterial properties which prevent the growth of intestinal bacteria. All the five senses of the human body get benefits from this fruit, while their power also improves. In case of eye infection just washing the eyes with Haritaki decreases the effects of infection. Its pulp helps to increase levels of blood oxygen, thus enabling the tissues to live for a longer period of time.

When all the three fruits are combined, they complement each other. A person of any age can get benefits from it. Using it daily makes a person stay healthy and keeps them active all day long.

Balancing body weight

The body weight increases when unwanted fats are present in a body. These fats keep on growing because the digestion system is not clearing it. This is one of the reasons why there are more fats near belly areas. Triphala reduces the body weight by reducing these fats in body. People do exercises to reduce weight, but again food is needed to have energy. A person cannot stop eating food. But daily consumption of Triphala reduces and balances the body weight. With cholesterol and oxygen levels balanced, the body feels refreshed all the time. Triphala is also effective for gaining body weight. It divides the fats equally to every part of the body with balanced oxygen flow through the blood.

Skin Rejuvenation

If you want a simple method to keep the skin smooth and glowing all the time, then Triphala Skin Rejuvenation is what you need. Skin becomes dull because the proper amount of oxygen is not reaching it. This also damages the skin cells. These damaged cells can be seen as dark spots, which make a person’s appearance dull. Using Triphala prevents cells from being damaged and clears pigmentation. It also helps those with severe acne problems. Its regular use results in marked improvement within a few weeks. A Triphala face mask can also be prepared and applied on the face. It kills all bacteria that remove the cells, which makes the skin become fairer.

Hair and Dandruff problem

Hair fall makes everyone feel bad. With Triphala, those worries can be set at rest. Triphala is a simple and proven solution to hair fall problem. Cells present in the roots of the hair become week and this is why hair falls. The nutrients do not reach the roots of the hair, which reduces the strength of the hair. Dandruff is the other reason that makes the hair weak. Hair cells need to be strong so that they stick well. The scalp has to be moisturized well, so dandruff does not occur again and hair have their proper growth. Use Triphala before going to sleep and within a few months the hair problems are sure to reduce.

Using Triphala

Tea form: It is one of the oldest forms wherein Triphala Powder is added to boiling water. Just stir it well in warm water, or boil it and drink. It starts working rapidly for digestion problems. You will find five different types of tastes in it! Sour, Sweet, Bitter, astringent and pungent. This tea is recommended to be taken on an empty stomach. Take it once in the morning when you wake up, and take a second one 30 minutes after dinner.

Tablet Form: Triphala tablets are especially for those who find it difficult to drink tea of Triphala. Tablets are easily available at any Ayurvedic or online store. Be sure to take it in proper portions. Many people do complain that they are having problems while using it. The reason for this is that they consume it more than needed.
